A group of 70 students forming the University of Manitoba’s Space Applications and Technology Society are diligently working to design a triple-cube satellite to house an experiment to measure the reaction of tardigrades to the vacuum of space. The satellite will be entered into the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge (CSDC) managed by the federally incorporated, not-for-profit CSDC Management Society Inc. The winning satellite will be launched into orbit in May 2016. Advisers and contributors from industry, academia, and government make themselves available to assist with the project. BobCAD-CAM donated three software packages to the project as part of its Manufacturers of the Future program.

The quality and temperature of process water for waterjet cutting can extend the life of seals and components critical to the cutting process and lengthen the time between maintenance. A chiller should be used to keep the water temperature below 70 degrees F and, depending on the impurity level, a water softener, deionization system, or reverse osmosis system should be considered to bring the water’s chemical levels within recommended OEM standards.
