To compensate for deflection under rolling pressure, plate machine rolls are designed with crowns, slightly larger middle diameters. When pressure is applied from the bottom roll, the crowned area on the top roll deflects up, optimally creating a straight roll when the plate is in motion. Short strips of shim material, 4, 5, or 6 in. wide, can artificially add thickness to correct for over- or undercrowning and expand the capabilities of the plate roll.

From producing fairly simple countersinks to bends to tabs to tall louvers to complex special shapes, upforming can enhance a turret’s multitasking capabilities and reduce multiple processes to one pass. With upforming, those material marking and deformation issues are avoided because the forming die rests at the same height as the standard dies and rises above the die line only during the forming process.

About a decade ago solid state fiber lasers began zipping through thin metal primarily on OEM shop floors. Since then manufacturers have challenged the initial material thickness limitations and are engineering ways to expand capabilities. Add the broader material cutting capability to the speed, ease of operation, low maintenance, low operating costs, and ability to cut exotic and coated materials, and fiber lasers are making their way into job shops producing low numbers of parts from a high mix of materials.
