Cincinnati Incorporated (CI) has announced the sale of two of its Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) systems to Local Motors for production of 3-D-printed automobiles.
Local Motors currently has two microfactories in Phoenix and Las Vegas. The company plans to complete two more this summer—in Knoxville, Tenn., and National Harbor, Md.—and to open 100 around the world in the next 10 years.
Each 40,000-sq.-ft. microfactory is the result of partnerships with local businesses and governments, working in tandem with the communities they serve. “Ultimately, we will create relevant vehicles tailored to the needs of specific markets, all printed on the BAAM,” said Elle Shelley, chief marketing officer for Local Motors.
Each microfactory will produce up to 250 vehicles per year, including highway-ready, 3-D-printed cars; off-road vehicles with on-road capability; and neighborhood electric vehicles. Customers will visit a microfactory to design and purchase their vehicle, which then will be produced on-site.
