Bombardier nets $145 million order for German trains

Bombardier has delivered almost 2,000 modern double-deck cars to Deutsche Bahn since 1992.

Bombardier Transportation has been awarded a contract to supply Germany's Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG) with 12 TWINDEXX Vario trains.

The order was placed at the end of March 2013, and is valued at approximately $145 million US.

The contract is part of a framework agreement signed in December 2008, where DB AG ordered 290 variable double-deck coaches for long-distance and regional routes.

The trains can reach a top speed of 160 km/h, and will operate between the towns of Bamberg, Würzburg, Aschaffenburg and Frankfurt. Delivery of the trains will begin in the second half of 2015.

The TWINDEXX Vario double-deck trains have two motor cars and two intermediate coaches, with a wide kinematic profile and use lightweight steel construction.

“Our variable trains enable operators to meet fully the needs of modern rail transportation by combining high passenger capacity with enhanced flexibility. Continuous development of proven solutions is the secret behind the success of these popular double-deck trains manufactured in Görlitz,” said Dr. Roman Müller, Vice President Sales Germany, Bombardier Transportation.

Bombardier builds the double-deck trains at their plant in Görlitz, Germany. Its site in Hennigsdorf, Germany, is involved in a wide range of research and development activities. The bogies are manufactured in Siegen, Germany, and the drive engines are manufactured in Västerås, Sweden.
