Gitga’at Waiward Industrial, Kitimat, B.C., has been awarded a contract to supply stick built structural steel to JGC Fluor, the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the LNG Canada Project.
Gitga’at Waiward Industrial is a joint venture partnership between Gitga’at First Nation and Waiward Industrial that was formed in November 2019, and provides a comprehensive range of construction, maintenance, fabrication, and engineering services.
Structural steel supplied to the LNG Canada project by Gitga’at Waiward Industrial will be used to construct a number of on-site facilities. Deliveries are expected to commence in early 2021 and continue through to December 2022.
“This award represents a win/win for Gitga’at Waiward and the LNG Canada Project,” said Andy Brooks, CEO, Waiward Industrial. “It demonstrates the commitment JGC Fluor and LNG Canada have to ensuring benefits flow to local communities, and exemplifies what can be achieved when the Indigenous values of sustainability and community well-being align with a company known for integrity, creating solutions, and a commitment to excellence.”
“The significance of the LNG Canada Project work to the Gitga’at Nation and to all Northwest B.C.’s Indigenous nations can’t be underestimated,” said Paul Paterson, CEO, Gitga’at Development Corporation. “The economic successes of the region’s First Nations are instrumental to a vibrant regional economy and through extension, the provincial and national economy.”
The LNG Canada Project is a liquefied natural gas export facility under construction in Kitimat, B.C., on the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation.
