GM launches Cadillac Lyriq production nine months ahead of schedule

General Motors has begun retail production of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq—the brand’s first all-electric vehicle—at its Spring Hill, Tenn., assembly plant.

The automaker announced a commitment to invest $2 billion in Spring Hill Assembly in October 2020, and the team completed preparations for production nine months ahead of the original schedule. Reservations for the Debut Edition sold out in just over 10 minutes late last summer, and Cadillac will begin taking additional orders on May 19.

The vehicle is built on the automaker’s Ultium Platform, which encompasses a common architecture and propulsion components like battery cells, modules, packs, Ultium Drive units, EV motors, and integrated power electronics. The platform is designed to help GM realize a strategic value chain shift across its network of vehicle assembly plants as the company commonizes and streamlines machinery, tooling, and assembly processes.

The Spring Hill manufacturing complex, which comprises a vehicle assembly plant, metal stamping plant, and engine plant, is the largest GM facility in North America. Opened in 1990, the complex has built more than 4.5 million vehicles.
