Stelco named national steel sponsor for CWB Welding Foundation Mind Over Metal Camps

Stelco announced that it will supply steel for over 80 CWB Welding Foundation Mind Over Metal (MOM) Camps that will run throughout Canada in 2018/19.

Approximately 20 camp participants are using the steel to create and weld projects. At the camps, youths age 12-15 are introduced to welding through safety training, theoretical, and hands-on learning.

Each camp receives a pallet of steel weighing approximately 860 pounds that would normally cost the CWB Welding Foundation $1,000 to supply. This is the first year that CWB Welding Foundation has had a National Steel Sponsor.

“We recognize the importance of welding safety training, early exposure, and hands-on learning,' said Ron Merk, division manager, Stelco.

They have been running since 2014, with the inaugural camp hosted in Edmonton, Alta. Many camps focus on at-risk youth, Indigenous, women, New Canadians, and the underrepresented.

“These camps are specifically designed to provide youth with a hands-on introduction to welding and inspire them to pursue a career in welding,” said Deborah Mates, executive director, CWB Welding Foundation.

Swent Fabrication & Machine Ltd. also contributed by offering to organize, cut and palletize all the steel donated by Stelco.

Earlier this year, Stelco presented the CWB Welding Foundation with a cheque for $182,000 to make equipment upgrades to five secondary schools in Ontario including Assumption College School, Brantford Collegiate Institute and Vocational School, Cayuga Secondary School, Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Vocational School, and Waterford District High School.
