AxSEAM scanner from Olympus simplifies longitudinal seam weld inspection

Olympus has introduced the AxSEAM portable phased-array ultrasonic scanner for the inspection of long seam welds in oil and gas pipes, pressure vessels, and wind towers.

Features include toolless probe holders and patented dome-shaped wheels. The new ScanDeck module employs LED indicators that alert the operator to a lack of couplant and when the scanning speed has exceeded the maximum acquisition rate. A laser light guide also helps the operator maintain a straight scan line for accurate data acquisition.

Buttons on the module are linked directly to an OmniScan flaw detector, enabling the operator to remotely start the data acquisition as well as “zero” the encoder position.

The scanner can switch quickly between longitudinal and circumferential scanning on a variety of pipe diameters. Four probe holders accommodate phased-array and time-of-flight diffraction probes.
