3D Slant, a 3D printing print farm in Nampa, Idaho, has posted a blog that explains why 3D printing is a cheap alternative to injection molding.
3D printing has long been discussed as a potential alternative to injection molding with design advantages. But injection molding is generally considered to be a less expensive option at scale because the cost of the mold is easily amortized across the production of thousands of parts.
While that is true at the manufacturing stage, there are other factors in the supply chain—design, iteration, assembly, warehousing—that contribute to the cost of a product. And according to 3D Slant, 3D printing is arguably less expensive than injection molding when all those other factors are taken into account.
