Highlights from the 2014 AMExpo

This year's event took place on Sept 23-24 at the International Centre, Hall 5

This year's Advanced Manufacturing Expo and 3D printing event produced by SME Canada, began yesterday, September 23, with throngs of people lining up to attend. With more pre-registrations than initially thought and a lineup around the room, exhibitors and speakers at the event were given a great opportunity to expose people to new and innovative products and initiatives going on in the advanced manufacturing world.

The event is held at the International Centre, Hall 5,  and continues today with speaker, the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for FEDDEV Ontario, along with various panel discussions as well as booth exhibitions.

The event kicked off  yesterday with keynote speaker, Jason Lopes, exploring how 3D printing is being used in Hollywood. The room was filled with interested guests wanting to learn more about how 3D printing was used to develop costumes and makeup for some of the past years' blockbusters, including Twilight, RoboCop, the Avengers, and Avatar, to name a few.

Once the keynote ended, guests were able to explore the various booths and technologies from the industries biggest and brightest. One of the highlights was seen at the Renishaw's booth, which featured the first ever 3D printed bicycle. Burloak Engineered Solutions' booth allowed attendees to ask about their initiative to build the first ever Canadian advanced manufacturing centre, while Nikon featured its newest addition, the P3D, protable 3D measuring system.

Many colleges and universities were also in attendance, as booth exhibitors as well as attendees. The future industry professionals and leaders were exposed to some great information and innovations as well as post-secondary program options.

Whether you were attending to explore the newest innovations in 3D printing, finding a great CMM, understanding advanced manufacturing for medical devices or networking opportunities, the AMExpo was worth attending.
