Kennametal PCD round tools enable high-efficiency aluminum machining

Kennametal has introduced a new line of PCD round tools for aluminum machining that it says delivers up to 10 times higher productivity than carbide tooling. The new line of drills, reamers, and end millsprovides good tool life and wear resistance even in very abrasive aluminum alloys and isavailable with very short lead times, the company states.

In drilling and reaming operations, these tools each cutting speeds up to 3,000 SFM. Milling operations can be performed at 20,000 SFM.

With through-the-tool coolant capabilities and an MQL-ready interface, these PCD round tools are suitable for both rough and finish machining. Surface roughness of Ra 0.1 to 0.8 μm is achievable, says the manufacturer.

PCD grade KD1410 helps extend tool life and is suitable for the high-silicon-content aluminum used to make automotive parts like engine blocks or cylinder heads.

The line of PCD end mills, offered in diameters from 6 to 50 mm, can cut to depths up to 50 mm. Centre-cutting, roughing, and finishing geometries are available with various rake angles. The PCD drills have diameters from 6 to 20 mm in 0.5-mm increments. Cutting depths are up to 5xD. The PCD reaming tools are between 6- and 20-mm dia. in 1-mm increments. Both through- and blind-hole versions are available. For diameters up to 42 mm, a PCD modular reaming system with KST coupling is available.
