Star SU, part of the Star Cutter family of companies, has created single-flute, extended-length gundrills, which are custom-built drills per application in lengths up to 24 in. and effective tool lengths up to 100xD.
These drills are designed to machine straight, deep holes and hold excellent finishes in most materials.
According to the company, the gundrills can have numerous machining benefits, including a higher chip load capability to help reduce cycle time; reduced drift, which allows good TIR results from start to exit; increased resistance to wind-up forces, helping reduce premature tool wear; and the ability to recoat the tool after regrinding if it’s manufactured without a steel driver.
