Tungaloy DrillMeister drill heads create flat-bottom holes

Tungaloy has expanded its DrillMeister line of DMF-style exchangeable-head drills to include a drill diameter range from 6.0 to 9.9 mm, which is designed for creating flat-bottom holes and for challenging applications such as drilling on inclined or curved surfaces.

The DMF heads have a 180-degree cutting edge with a chisel point in the centre that acts as a pilot to generate good hole position and straightness. The drill heads can produce holes up to 8xD in a single operation, eliminating the need for drilling pre-holes.

Because the flat edge geometry initially engages with its outer edge when entering and exiting inclined or curved surfaces, the drill is less susceptible to deflecting, or walking, on the surface and better able to drill straight holes when compared with the standard drill point with a 140-degree angle that makes first contact with such surfaces, the company states.

The drill heads are available in the AH9130 grade, which was specifically developed for holemaking applications. A combination of wear and fracture resistance enhances the grade’s tool life and wear prediction, according to the manufacturer.
