Walter Tiger·tec Gold PVD grade WSP45G suitable for universal milling

Walter has introduced its Tiger·tec Gold PVD grade WSP45G, a new generation of indexable carbide inserts for milling that expand capabilities for slotting, shoulder milling, and copy milling.

The new grade can be used for demanding machining applications such as interrupted cuts and difficult materials, the company states.

This grade is capable of creating longer tool life, greater reliability, and better performance in stainless steels and heat-resistant superalloys, and better cutting performance in steels. With this launch, this PVD grade now can be used universally in all of the company’s standard milling cutters.

According to the manufacturer, the key to the grade's performance is its coating technology and its special layer structure. The gold-coloured zirconium nitride (ZrN) top layer has low-friction characteristics as well as excellent wear detection, making it possible to use the full potential of the indexable insert to extend tool life. Next, multiple layers of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) increase the insert’s temperature resistance.

All are applied on top of a titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) base layer and a carbide substrate as a foundation, which increases overall wear resistance. These properties make the inserts suitable for challenging conditions, such as interrupted cuts, long overhangs with a tendency to vibrate, and wet machining.
