Steelcon announces product-specific Type III Environmental Product Declaration for SIN Beam

Steelcon Group of Companies has announced that a product-specific Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is now available for SIN Beam.

The SIN Beam a steel beam that can reduce the amount of steel required in a structure by up to 30 per cent, according to the company.

A Type III EPD is a third-party verified, registered document created following rigorous international standards that communicates a standard set of comprehensive information about a product’s environmental impact throughout its lifecycle. Steelcon’s SIN Beam EPD, published by EPD program provider Smart EPD, received independent external verification according to ISO 14025.

“EPDs play a key role in contributing towards the many green building certification programs available today,” said Steelcon President Danny Bianco. “Steelcon is pleased to be able to support the sustainability goals of our clients by providing them with the tools they need to make more informed and sustainable decisions about the products they use.”

Steelcon worked with premier carbon consultancy and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) specialists Mantle Developments to complete a detailed product LCA of SIN Beam’s production life cycle, from the initial raw materials through to transportation and manufacturing. Based on Mantle’s LCA, which received independent third-party critical review according to ISO 14044 and ISO 14071 standards, the SIN Beam EPD reports its impact in key environmental areas.

“Leaders in the construction space are increasingly requiring EPDs for the materials they purchase to confirm its carbon footprint and this type of disclosure is starting to be required in some jurisdictions and/or by some builders as EPDs can also help projects achieve a number of LEED points,” said Ryan Zizzo, CEO of Mantle Developments. “We’re thrilled to be supporting Steelcon in their decarbonization journey and helping them stay ahead of the green curve.”
