Walter has released the FW4 and MW4 positive wiper geometries for longitudinal turning and facing that combine a wiper and the company’s Tiger·tec® Gold grades.
The curved wiper cutting edge makes the wiper action universal in numerous material groups, such as steels, stainless steels, cast irons, and superalloys.
The wiper action reduces machining time by allowing machinists to double their feed rate, while imparting the same surface finish. In some cases, feed rate increases of up to 300 per cent were successfully utilized, the company states.
Higher feeds reduce the time that an insert stays in the cut, reducing the friction and temperatures in the insert, extending tool life and reducing indexing times. Alternatively, a manufacturer can double the surface quality while maintaining the same feed, which is the traditional use of wiper inserts.
The FW4 universal wiper geometry has a narrow chipbreaker, which generates short chips, for finishing operations. The machining parameters for the FW4 geometry are a feed of 0.0012 to 0.020 in. and a cutting depth of 0.004 to 0.100 in. The primary application is turning steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. A secondary application is turning superalloys.
The MW4 universal wiper geometry has an open chipbreaker groove and longer radius wiper cutting edge for high feeds during medium machining operations. The machining parameters for the MW4 geometry are a feed of 0.005 to 0.022 in. and a cutting depth of 0.020 to 0.180 in. The primary application is turning steel and cast iron, and a secondary application is turning stainless steel and superalloys. Because the wiper edge has a curved design, it improves surface quality, productivity, and process reliability even if the machine tool is not aligned 100 per cent precisely, such as when the turret is slightly offset. The new chipbreakers also increase the chip breaking range, resulting in less machine downtime caused by the creation of bird nests. Walter www.walter-tools.com/ussubscribe now
