Makino's a500Z 5-axis HMC accommodates complex part geometries with minimal setups

Makino will showcase at CMTS the a500Z 5-axis horizontal machining centre, which minimizes the force path lengths both through the spindle as well as through the workpiece, transferring both cutting loads and reactive forces into the machine’s three-point leveled bed.

The machine handles workpieces of up to Ø24.8 by 19.9 in. high, with payload weights up to 880 lbs. The X and Y strokes are 28.7 and 29.5 in., respectively, with the Z stroke ranging from 19.7 to 27.6 in., depending on the rotary axes positioning.

Both rotary tables are of the direct-drive type, with 360-degree movement on the B axis and 180-degree movement on the slant-style C-axis unit. The linear axes rapids are 2,362 IPM, and B-axis rotation rapid rate is 45,000 degrees per minute.

A standard 14,000-RPM spindle offers output capabilities of 49.6-HP peak power and 223 ft.-lbs. peak torque.

Tool changer magazine sizes range from the standard 60-tool-capacity, ring-type unit to a 313-tool, matrix-type magazine.
