GM reaffirms commitment to Ontario operations outside of Oshawa plant

GM met with federal and Ontario governments at the Detroit auto show last week. The auto maker affirmed that it plans to continue its manufacturing in Canada at its Ingersoll and St. Catharines plants.

GM explained that there is no viable business case for keeping production at the Oshawa Assembly beyond the end of the year because of rapid changes in the North American car market, cancellation of Oshawa products, and persistent low utilization at the facility.

The company also plans to expand its next-gen auto engineering, software and testing work in Oshawa, Markham, Kapuskasing and soon in Toronto.
